Who Says George W Bush Won’t Vote for Trump?
The New York Times has once again put its rather large left foot in its mouth, this time pretending to know a former president’s mind better than his staff members.
On Saturday, the Grey Lady come out with an article taking note of all the prominent Republican politicians and officials that will not be supporting President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, and remarking that some would even be voting for former vice president Joe Biden. Included in this list was former President George W. Bush.
According to the Times, “Former President George W. Bush won’t support the re-election of Mr. Trump, and Jeb Bush isn’t sure how he’ll vote, say people familiar with their thinking.”
However, it has since been proven that the Times is slightly, if not wholly, misinformed.
In fact, Bush’s spokesman Freddy Ford has called the piece, or at least the parts about Bush’s presumed thoughts on the election, as “completely made up.”
Ford noted that GW Bush is “retired from presidential politics and has not indicated how he will vote.” The spokesman said that Bush would be free to comment on policies, such as he did earlier this week, stating that the US must “examine our tragic failures” on race. However, he will not be speaking directly about the election.
And in all honesty, the Times clearly knew this. They even said as much near the end of their article, quoting Ford.
“Yet neither Mr. Mattis, nor any other former Trump official, is likely to be able to prod Mr. Bush to publicly state his opposition. Freddy Ford, a spokesman for Mr. Bush, said the former president would stay out of the election and speak only on policy issues, as he did this week in stating that the country must ‘examine our tragic failures’ on race.”
So basically, what they have done is to take Ford’s words and twist them into something that fits their narrative and makes things look bad for President Trump. Somehow keeping his opinion to himself on the election means that Bush won’t be voting for Trump. Where they exactly got this idea is beyond me.
Maybe they just needed a big name for the headline. Sure, the article is chocked full of plenty of other prominent Republican or at least conservative-leaning politicians. However, none of them have quite the same ring as “former President Bush won’t support Trump.”
For instance, former Secretary of State Colin Powell is mentioned, as his decision to not vote for Trump has been made clear over the last few weeks. Powell, according to the Times, has stated that Trump “lies about things” and can’t be held accountable by Congress.
But in reality, we already knew Powell wouldn’t be supporting our current Commander in Chief.
After all, he didn’t vote for him in 2016 and, even though Powell is a registered Republican, in 2008 and again in 2012, he voted for matters of skin color rather than policy issues or what was best for America, helping to put Obama in the Oval Office.
So it should be no surprise then that he would so quickly turn his affection to Obama’s vice president over Trump, especially since Powell claims to be so “close to Mr. Biden,” according to the Times.
Also mentioned in the piece was the widow of former Senator John McCain, Cindy McCain. According to the article, she is “almost certain to support Mr. Biden but is unsure how public to be about it because one of her sons is eying a run for office.”
The article, which has still not been edited to reflect Bush’s unknown feelings on the election, goes on and on, naming Republican after Republican, obviously in the hopes to deter others in that party from voting for the only conservative candidate.
However, it’s unlikely that these names, George W. Bush’s included, will matter much to Trump’s base of voters. After all, Trump has already proven far more conservative than either Bush, father or son, on several important policy issues. Besides, it’s a known fact that Bush didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 either.
This is just one more attempt by the left-driven media to push for what they want. And another failed try at saying they don’t take sides.
