Biden Might Want to Pick Harris but Will They Let Him?

As November draws ever closer, the pressure for assumed Democratic candidate Joe Biden to pick a running mate has become paramount. Nearly every time he makes an appearance, whether on radio or television, he is asked about the upcoming decision. His latest response, given on Tuesday, was that he plans to announce his choice this week, a mere two weeks before the DNC’s national convention.

So who is he choosing?

Well, we have known for some time he is going to choose a woman, and a woman “of color” at that. This would seem to exclude people previously thought to be on his shortlist, like Senator Elizabeth Warren and Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer. Those left on the list are women such as Senator Kamala Harris, Val Demings, and Karen Bass.

However, in recent weeks, another name is taking precedence: Susan Rice.

And it seems, this push for Rice may be his allies’ way of pushing Harris out the door, at least for VP that is.

Since the beginning, Harris has been on the shortlist. Why? Well, because she checks all the right boxes. Clearly, she is a woman and one of color.  But beyond that, she also both political and law enforcement experience.

However, as several of Biden’s advisors have pointed out, she is also very ambitious. And as she has already proven in her former campaign to be the president herself, she will twist and contort herself to fit whatever the people say they want.

Take her stance on criminal justice, for example. As DA in San Francisco and then California’s AG, she was tough on crime, and yet when running for president, she vowed to release the very prisoners she helped put away.

And then, of course, there is her attack on Biden himself during the Democratic debates. She basically called Biden racist, even accusing him of being pro-segregation. But now, when there is another shot at getting to White House, she asks him to forgive and forget.

Biden might be able to, but those close to him might not be able to.

As CNBC reports, a war is “waging… to stop Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif, from becoming his vice president. Some remain bitter about her attacks on Biden during primary debates last year, saying they bring into question her loyalty to the former vice president. Others argue what she’s too ambitious and that she will be solely focused on becoming president herself.”

However, it’s clear he has something in mind for her.

During an appearance on Tuesday, Biden was photographed holding what appeared to be a list of positive talking points about Kamala Harris. Clearly visible on the list were such things as “great respect for her,” “talented,” “campaigned with me & Jill,” and “Do not hold grudges.”

Many gave this list as proof that he wants her as VP. However, as we can see a little further down on the list, other qualities of Harris are listed that seem to do with a completely different job title.

Those read:

Dept. of Justice Reform

  • The people’s lawyer
  • Not the president’s lawyer
  • Highest qualifications
  • Decisions on law and fact

Could it be he wants her to be his Attorney General instead of the vice president?

The list above would have little do with the office of the VP. Besides, as a former AG for the state of California, it’s not like the job would something utterly foreign to her, albeit on a much grander scale.

And with Harris pretty much spoken for as AG, the title of VP is still up for grabs and, therefore, still very much within the grasp of Susan Rice.

After all, we all know how much he likes her already.

And as former senior advisor to Obama, Valerie Jarrett told Politico, “He has seen her not just in good times but on really hard and challenging occasions.” and she added, “There is a level and depth to her experience which would be a real asset.” And Biden knows it.

As Politico noted, his office as “Obama’s No. 2,” was “just steps away from hers.” It is this closeness to Biden that gives others on the shortlist, such as Harris, Bass, and Demings, real cause to worry.

However, as recent polls from Politico and Morning Consult suggest, no matter who he chooses, the results pretty much all look the same as far as voter approval goes. Just as long as she is a woman of color, the progressive left will be happy.

That is until Trump beats him against all odds again…
