The international community is up in arms over the proposed cancelation of the 2020 Olympics that are scheduled to be held in Tokyo later this year. The coronavirus has taken its toll on the world and its markets to the point that many believe that the sickness is going to be the next great pandemic. The Olympics would be the perfect breeding ground to spread the virus to the rest of the world. As dozens of nations would gather together to compete against other the virus could easily be taken back to their homelands.
Cancelation of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics just makes sense according to one senior Olympic official. There is no way that they could postpone it are moving it to another nation is such a short amount of time. The virus spreads quickly and can kill within weeks of contracting the virus. All it needs to spread around the world is a place where the nations get together and it can reach the borders of untouched nations.
The virus has taken its toll on the world markets as they have lost thousands of points over the past few days. People are selling their shares because they believe that things are going to crash soon if the virus is not dealt with soon. The current totals of infection have reached just over 80,000 people. It has already claimed 2,600 souls. There is just nothing that seems to stop it except the isolation of the infected people.
Frantic people are afraid that the Olympics would just allow it to spread faster. That is why they are thinking of canceling the event altogether. The games are set to begin in July so a decision on whether to hold the venue is coming soon. Dick Pound who is a senior member of the International Olympic Committee stated that “a total cancelation IS on the table.” The decision is not a light one that has to be made.
Thousands of races and athletes have trained for years and competed to make it to the Olympics. And since they only come every four years some people will never have another chance to compete on that high of a level again. It is more than a manner of pride. It is a life-changing event for many of the athletes.
Pound also stated that “In and around that time, I’d say folks are going to have to ask: ‘Is this under sufficient control that we can be confident about going to Tokyo or not?'” That is the question that a lot of people are asking right now. Those that have been stranded on the cruise ships have been asking that question. They want to know when they can get off the ship of death. They just want to go home.
The decision to hold the Olympics will fall to a few leaders soon. They will have to judge more than just a race but rather a whole new concept. They will have to determine if the risk of lives is great enough to hold the races. If the level of risk is low, then there is a good chance that the Olympics will take place. But only time will tell. The more people that are infected will tell if the faces can take place.
Pound has communicated that the athletes should continue to train as normal. They should not give up. If they stop pending a cancelation, and they decide to hold the event, then the athlete has only hurt themselves. They should continue as if the Olympics will take place as planned. He stated that “As far as we all know, you’re going to be in Tokyo. All indications are at this stage that it will be business as usual. So keep focused on your sport and be sure that the IOC is not going to send you into a pandemic situation.”
Cancelation of the Olympics is a big deal because in the past only war has been the cause of their cancelation. There have been only three times when they were canceled and all three were because of the two World Wars.
