Jehad Serwan Mostafa is considered a U.S. citizen and was born in the San Diego, California area. Federal prosecutors and the FBI say 37-year-old Mostafa is the top on the list of the world’s most wanted terrorist. They believe he is fighting with the terrorist organization known as al-Shabaab. Earlier this week, officials issued a new indictment not only as a member of the terrorist group but his alleged leadership. Al-Shabaab is known for slaughtering hundreds of people and hurting or killing countless innocent people in Africa.
Beginning in 2009, Mostafa was first charged with supporting the terrorist organization with materials. The additional charges were added due to the alleged leadership of violent acts from 2009 to 2017. There is a $5 million reward on any information which will lead to the arrest of the most wanted terrorist in the world. It goes to say no one should try to confront him due to he is extremely dangerous.
The FBI is highly concerned at the moment due to Mostafa still considered an American citizen, which gives him the ties to become a severe threat to the American people. A recent call was made and revealed of a planned attack by al-Shabaab on American people. All around the world, he, along with his group, is a danger to everyone in America and abroad.
The FBI special agent who is in charge of the San Diego Field Office, Scott Brunner, stated, “We must use every tool in our toolbox to disrupt a potential terrorist attack before it happens. The FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the State Department have continued an extensive investigation since 2010 to locate this terrorist. The FBI has not forgotten, has not stopped working, and will not stop until Mostafa is found.”
The FBI has pleaded with citizens from every part of the world to look closely at his picture and listen to the audio of his voice to recognize anything which can lead to his capture. They are practically screaming to the world, Mostafa is ranked at the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List. They believe he is residing in Somalia at the moment.
There is evidence leading the FBI to believe Mostafa is in charge of the al-Shabaab’s explosives department. They claim he and his team have improvised all explosive devices. The FBI also claims Mostafa is a very intelligent individual as he was a graduate of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), in 2004. The following year, Mostafa went to Yemen and Somalia fighting against the Ethiopian forces. It was said he became a member of al-Shabaab around 2006 and worked his way through the ranks within the terrorist organization.
Federal prosecutors stated al-Shabaab’s terrorist attacks have killed and wounded American citizens around the world. During the World Cup soccer match at a bar in Uganda, a suicide bombing took place in 2010. An American citizen was killed in that attack and was working for a San Diego nonprofit organization. Another attack was at a shopping mall in Kenya, where a San Diego area high school graduate was killed in 2013.
The reason the FBI believe Mostafa is in Somalia is because of the recent attack which took place in October injuring a U.S. service member. The U.S. service member was injured in the aftermath of the bombing during the cleanup process when he received a concussion. It was a U.S. Military Airfield which was attacked.
There was a second attack the same day by a suicide car bomber, which targeted Italian peacekeepers. As the U.S. and Somali forces team up, they are keeping the pressure on the terrorist organization. U.S. Air Force Col. Chris Karns stated, “This strike demonstrates that U.S. and Somali forces will continue to take every opportunity to counter and degrade the capacity of al-Shabab to plan and conduct attacks. Continued pressure on al-Shabab impacts their ability to further export violence across Somalia and elsewhere.”
Approximately 600 to 800 American troops are assisting Somalia forces currently, and the terror groups are still striking those areas and the surrounding territories. Almost every target hit by al-Shabaab has injured or killed an American in most of their attacks. This is why the FBI and the U.S. military believe the terrorist organization is in the area. They are not only targeting foreign enemies, but they are also targeting Americans as well. This is why the FBI feels attacks on U.S. soil are possible.
