Joe Biden doesn’t want to ride on Obama’s coattails any longer. In fact, he’d like to move forward entirely, forgetting that Barrack Obama had been the one to get him to where he is today. If it weren’t for Obama choosing Biden as his running mate, half the country would have no idea who he is. After all, Senators from Delaware don’t typically get a lot of national attention.
Biden was upset, though. He was upset that Obama didn’t give his endorsement. Having the endorsement of a president is everything for your campaign. It’s customary for a president to endorse his VP, should that VP ever run. However, Obama has said openly that he is not going to endorse anyone. Instead, he wishes luck to all of the Democratic candidates.
The former VP has decided that he’s fine without the endorsement. Now that he’s driving across the state of Iowa in his “No Malarkey” bus, he is making sure everyone knows it, too.
There have been a number of reporters on the Biden bus – the same bus that has the definition of malarkey printed on the side. They’ve been asking about Barack Obama, who has been unusually silent with the exception of a piece in Politico that identifies Obama’s lack of endorsement.
According to Natasha Korecki of Politico, the former VP has said specifically that he asked Obama not to enforce him. Biden says “Everyone knows I’m close with him,” which is why he says that he doesn’t need Obama’s endorsement.
If you’re not buying this, no one else is, either. No candidate, regardless of how connected, known, or popular he is, is going to tell a president not to endorse him – especially one who was the president at the same time as you being a vice president.
This little story about asking Obama not to endorse him may have been believed had he announced it months ago. However, Barack Obama told reporters at the beginning of the campaign that he wasn’t going to issue an endorsement to any of the candidates. Instead, he wanted to watch how everything played out and wished everyone the best of luck with their campaigns.
Politico Magazine went as far as quoting Obama that Biden “doesn’t have it” – meaning that he doesn’t have his endorsement. However, it can also be interpreted that Obama doesn’t believe that Biden has the capabilities to be president. Biden acknowledged to reporters that if Obama said that, there is truth to it. This has since caused a number of people to throw Biden’s campaign motto at him, begging that he stop with the malarkey.
Biden, seemingly cockier now that there are fewer candidates, has said that even if it were down to just three candidates, he still wouldn’t need Obama’s endorsement. With Kamala Harris out of the running now, too, it seems Biden is feeling more confident. His confidence is bordering on the edge of arrogance with many of his statements. He may say that he doesn’t need Obama’s endorsement, but what is he supposed to say? He wasn’t going to get it anyway because Obama has no desire to endorse anyone.
Biden’s still not doing as well as he started out to be in the polls. He’s dropped considerably, with Warren and Sanders taking a stronger lead. In the Iowa polls, even Pete Buttigieg is ahead of the former VP. However, Biden still holds strong that he doesn’t need Obama’s endorsement.
While Joe Biden has plenty of endorsements, he’s not getting the one that would really help him. Everyone’s talking about the fact that he served with a president who hasn’t given him the support that other presidents have given their VPs. What does Obama know about Biden that we don’t? Perhaps he was aware of all of the shady dealings, too, and wants to save the United States from any added drama.
Either way, Biden is going to be spending the next few weeks talking about his “No Malarkey” approach to politics from his bus. Meanwhile, reporters will have to suffer through hearing about how he doesn’t need an endorsement from Obama. It’s embarrassing, really. The former VP is only drawing attention to the fact that he didn’t get the most important endorsement that he could have gotten. No one is buying the story, either. This means that on top of everything else, Biden is making it hard for people to believe his “No Malarkey” approach because that’s all he’s been feeding the press since the very beginning.
It’s no wonder that he’s flailing in the polls.
