Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is still the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has started to pile on the gaffes. The latest one, though, is a doozy. He is starting to remember things that never happened.
Fox News explains.
“Joe Biden slipped up once again on the campaign trail Saturday, saying he was the vice president at the time of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., adding to the number of mishaps that have drawn mockery from his opponents.
“The 76-year-old Biden, who left the vice presidency in 2017, was talking about gun violence with reporters in Iowa when he said that “those kids in Parkland came up to see me when I was vice president” after the shooting that left 14 students and three educators dead.”
The problem is that the Parkland school shooting took place a year after Biden left the office. The shooting started a kind of “children’s crusade” in which students who survived the massacre, such as David Hogg, became social media stars, listened to with seriousness by otherwise responsible adults. The carnage resulting from the shooting was caused, in part, by astonishing inaction by local law enforcement which refused to enter the school to hunt down and neutralize the shooter even while he was in the process of gunning down the students. Others blamed the National Rifle Association while still, other people noted a lack of response by officials to people with clear mental health issues.
The former vice president’s staff scrambled to commit damage control.
“A campaign official told Bloomberg that Biden was thinking of the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. that left 20 young children and six staff members dead.”
Even so, Democrats are starting to worry about Biden and are openly wondering if he is really up to the job of going head to head with President Trump. The president has proven to be merciless where it comes to his political enemies. The nightmare scenario that many Democratic movers and shakers consist of Biden having another one of his “senior moments” during a televised debate with Trump.
The problem is, Biden is roughly polling double nationwide of his nearest Democratic opponent. The Washington Times notes that the former vice president is the “least terrible” of the field, thus the Democratic Party is in trouble. Biden is considered the best hope the Democrats have of toppling Trump from out of the White House and ending what is for them a long, national nightmare.
The Biden problem is also combined with an overall Democratic disadvantage. The field is taking positions that most Americans find to be repellant. The Washington Times notes,” Democratic politicians once viewed as serious people have run off with the circus. They now embrace open borders, want to give free health care to illegal aliens and defend post-birth abortion, better known in other circles as ‘murder.’”
Biden himself has written an op-ed for the New York Times calling for the banning of all so-called “assault weapons,” the most extreme of the “common-sense gun control” laws that are being bandied about in the wake of the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. The term “assault rifle” is applied to weapons that have cosmetic qualities that make them frightening to some people who want private firearms banned. Even people who are open to enhanced background checks and so-called red flag laws, which would take firearms from people judged to be of danger to themselves and others, are leery of the idea of banning firearms based on cosmetic characteristics.
Biden capped a week of gaffes, which included the claim that “Poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids,” and that “we choose truth over facts.” The misspeaking reminded people that the former vice president’s greatest enemy is his mouth.
The Biden problem and a lack of any other candidate who may be able to confront President Trump successfully have caused some Democratic insiders to cast around for another candidate, someone popular and who has not entered the contest yet. Michelle Obama is the person most mentioned. The former first lady is wildly popular. The problem is that Ms. Obama has no desire whatsoever to get into elected politics. She is occupied with helping her husband create content for Netflix, a much more enjoyable occupation than trading shots with other Democrats and then President Trump.
For now, it looks like the Democrats are stuck with Joe Biden as their best hope of taking back the White House.
