Last week, Judge Amit Mehta ruled in favor of the Democrats’ request for President Trump to hand over the requested financial documents from the Mazars accounting firm.
A few days later, the New York Judge Edgardo Ramos shut down President Trump’s request to block the financial records released from the Deutsche Bank and Capital One to the Democrats.
Now Democrats are cheering and calling it a “victory win” for them. Both judges made the swift decision claiming Trump’s legal arguments were weak.
The Democrats feel they have won the battle, but they do not realize the fight has only just begun in the courtrooms. President Trump’s legal team will appeal the decisions.
President Trump has his eyes set on taking the cases all the way up to the Supreme Court. This was only meant as a delay for Congress to receive the documents, and the president along with his legal team knows how slow the court systems work.
It is possible for this situation to linger for the next few years. Whether or not, Trump hands over the requested documents, which he will not, the Democrats feel this is the momentum they needed to speed up the investigations.
Representative Elijah Cummings, a Democrat from Maryland, who is also the House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman, ordered the subpoena for Trump to hand over the financial documents from Mazars.
He is calling the judge’s ruling, “a slam dunk.” Cummings told reporters, “I think the courts will look at this and say, ‘wait a minute, there is a role for the Congress, and their role is clear.”
Both rulings will be appealed and the D.C. Court of Appeals will be taking on the Mazars case, and it will take several months before the judges come to a decision on the case.
The hearings will begin around the middle of July. For the appeal on the Capital One and Deutsche Banks, no date or time frame has been set, but both courts have agreed to expedite the cases.
Cummings felt encouraged the cases will not linger as Trump’s legal team were pushing forward.
He stated, “One of the things that we always worried about was whether it would take so long to get this thing through the court process that it just wouldn’t make any sense.”
Adam Schiff, who is House Intelligence Committee Chairman, and Maxine Waters, the House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman, are the two representatives who pushed forth the subpoenas for the two banks.
Schiff told reporters, “Recent reports that suspicious activity involving accounts linked to the president or his son-in-law went unreported to the Treasury Department only illustrate why it’s so important for us to do our work without delay or interference by the president or family members.
I’m very pleased with the court decision, upholding the rule of law and Congress’s ability to do its constitutional duty.”
Mitchel Sollenberger is a professor of political science at the University of Michigan-Dearborn who stated, “Those investigations, they’re going to be strengthened because you’ve got two federal courts right now who are saying that Congress, their powers aren’t weakened because there’s no explicit legislative purpose.”
Many Democrats, including the House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, feel the urge for calling an impeachment trial on the president. With the judge’s rulings last week it gives Pelosi and top Democrats some cushion to avoid impeachment hearings.
Pelosi has only mentioned impeachment enough to satisfy the party. The top Democrats and herself know if they start the impeachment proceedings this early, they will only be hurting themselves and cause the President to win the 2020 election.
There will be insufficient proof, which there already is, to impeach the president, and their early call of “victory” will make them all look like fools.
The GOP is not off key either, as they are using Attorney General William Barr to uncover and declassify proof they have on their part stating the FBI botched up the case and interfered with the elections.
President Trump is calling it “treason,” and they will release the transcripts of their findings. Many believe this will end the whole fiasco of this investigation.
Others believe it will only open up more evidence into something greater within the deep state.
Trump supporters hope the Left will slip up and jump into impeachment proceedings. They also hope this mess will end and nothing like this will ever happen again.
The Democrats may have cried “victory” way too soon!
